There are alternatives to spending a lot of money on stylized dance shoes, particularly for Lindy Hop. With the pounding our feet take on the dance floor, it's important to wear shoes that are comfortable and protective. My favorite dance "shoes" are any of the variations of the Adidas Superstar sneakers. I put chromed leather (a lot sturdier than normal suede) and voila! instant dance shoes. The entire process of chroming your sneakers (or normal shoes) is about 15 minutes. Your average cobbler can do the job or you can do it yourself. Locally, you can get chrome kits from Julie Kaufmann Dancing.
Some people wear bowling shoes. That works.
